A Little Dog Slobber Never Hurt Anyone
Creating portraits of families with dogs is such an enjoyable experience. When you bring a dog into the mix the normal rules of studio posing go right out the window. I can put everyone where I want them but inevitably the dog will move or get restless and everything has to be repositioned. So it ends up that wherever the dog sits generally determines how I pose everyone for the photograph. And the best part about it is that nobody cares; the dog is almost always the center of attention anyway so we might as well make the photograph about him.
Below are a few images from a family I had in our Olympia studio recently. The dog's name is Pete. They love him - you can tell - and nobody minded a bit when he got tired of sitting there, shot up and started roaming around the studio. I didn't even mind when he licked my lens. A little dog slobber never hurt anyone.
